Similar to a water heater element, an immersion 3 phase electrical element delivers the rated KW (6-18 depending on your model) of heating power. Each element is a threaded screw plug heater with length dependent on the KW rating and the Watt Density. Elements come in two wiring configurations: Delta, a more efficient industrial option, and Wye, the common choice when delta is not available. Within each configuration you will find a High / Low watt density option. High watt density delivers a higher wattage per square inch and thus produces more heat, such as for heating water. Low watt density heaters are typically longer and produce less heat per square inch, such as would be expected when heating a substance like mash / wort where scorching is a concern. Glacier Tanks considers a low watt density to be below 47, and a high watt density to be above. Generally, 30-40 is used for mash / wort, while 50 and above is preferred for heating water or used in a "Hot Liquor Tank".
