Tri Clamp side inlet strainers are the preferred choice simply because one does not have to disconnect the whole assembly to replace or clean the screen mesh. The inline strainer performs the same function, but mounts more similar to a spool with both ends clamped into a fitting. It is recommended that a strainer be placed after a pump, but prior to a plate chiller to reduce the debris entering the chiller, and ultimately the fermentation tank. The mesh is designed to be porous enough so as not to clog easily, but still trap large solids from passing through.
